To choose a security camera, match five things to your site: resolution (4MP up to 4K/8MP), night vision (ColorVu full-colour vs infrared), smart detection (AcuSense person/vehicle alerts), form factor plus IP/IK weather rating, and lens/field of view. ARC IP Networks, an authorised Hikvision reseller in Australia, can spec the right camera and recorder.

Night vision: ColorVu or IR
Smart AI: AcuSense
Power: PoE (single cable)
Weather: IP66 / IP67

How do I choose a security camera?

Choosing a camera is easier when you stop comparing spec sheets and start with your site. Walk the property, note what each camera needs to see and how far, whether it is indoors or exposed to weather, and how dark it gets at night. Then match those needs against six decisions. Everything else is detail.

Use this priority checklist as your framework. Work top to bottom: resolution and night vision matter most for usable footage, while form factor, weatherproofing and lens tune the camera to the exact spot.

What resolution do I need? (4MP vs 4K/8MP)

Resolution decides how much detail you keep. More megapixels means you can zoom into recorded footage and still read a face or a number plate. But higher resolution also uses more storage and needs more light to look its best, so bigger is not always better.

  • 4MP - a great all-round choice for entries, hallways and tighter yards where the camera is reasonably close.
  • 6MP - extra detail for medium areas without a huge jump in storage.
  • 8MP / 4K - best for wide scenes such as driveways, car parks and shopfronts, where you may need to identify someone across a large area.

A practical rule: pick the resolution that lets you identify (not just spot) a person at the furthest point you care about. For most homes a mix of 4MP and 8MP cameras covers every zone well.

Night vision: ColorVu vs infrared (IR)

Most incidents happen after dark, so night vision is one of the most important choices. There are two approaches, and many cameras now blend both.

ColorVu keeps colour at night, which is invaluable for describing what someone was wearing or which car they drove. IR is excellent for discreet, long-range detection. For a deeper comparison including AcuSense, read ColorVu vs AcuSense explained, or browse our ColorVu camera range.

Smart detection: does AcuSense matter?

Yes - if you are tired of false alarms. Older motion detection triggers on anything that moves: swaying trees, rain, headlights, cats. Hikvision AcuSense uses on-camera AI to tell people and vehicles apart from everything else, so you only get notified when it matters.

That means fewer nuisance alerts, faster searching of recorded footage (filter by person or vehicle), and the option of targeted deterrence - some cameras add a strobe light and audible warning that only trigger for a real person in a defined zone. Explore our AcuSense camera range to see the models that include it.

Which camera type? Turret, bullet, dome and PTZ

Form factor is about where the camera goes and what job it does. All four types can share the same sensor and features, so choose by placement.

Turret

The popular all-rounder. Compact, easy to aim and less prone to IR glare than domes - ideal for eaves, walls and entries.

Bullet

Visible and directional with strong range. Great for driveways, perimeters and anywhere an obvious deterrent helps.

Dome

Discreet and tamper-resistant, often IK-rated. Suits ceilings, retail and shared entrances.

PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras cover large sites from a single point and can track movement, but you usually pair them with fixed cameras for full coverage.

Outdoors, check two ratings on the datasheet: IP (dust and water - look for IP66 or IP67) and IK (impact resistance - IK10 is the toughest). Our guide to IP and IK ratings explains what each number means.

Lens, field of view and PoE vs wireless

The lens sets your field of view. A wider lens (for example 2.8mm) sees more but makes distant objects smaller; a longer lens narrows the view to reach further with more detail.

  • Fixed lens - simple and cost-effective when you already know the scene, such as a front door.
  • Motorised varifocal - lets you zoom and re-frame remotely without touching the camera, perfect when you need to fine-tune a long driveway or car park after install.

For power and data, wired PoE (Power over Ethernet) is the standard for reliable, always-on CCTV: one cable carries both power and video to the recorder, with no batteries to charge or Wi-Fi to drop out. Wireless cameras suit spots you cannot cable, but for a permanent system PoE wins on reliability. See PoE for CCTV explained for the standards.

Recording, storage and choosing a brand

Cameras are only half the system - you also need somewhere to record. A PoE NVR (network video recorder) powers the cameras and stores footage on internal hard drives. Match the NVR's channel count to your camera count, then size storage to how many days you want to keep. Browse our NVR range and plan your channels with the NVR channels & storage guide.

Finally, buy on brand and support, not just the sticker on the box. Choose a proven manufacturer, genuine Australian stock with local warranty, and a reseller who can advise before and after the sale. Tip: Standardise on one ecosystem. Matching cameras and NVR from the same brand makes setup, the mobile app and future upgrades far simpler.

Frequently asked questions

4MP is a strong all-rounder for tight areas, while 4K/8MP suits wide scenes like driveways and car parks where you may need to identify someone at a distance. Match resolution to the furthest point you need to recognise, not just detect.

They do different jobs. ColorVu keeps full colour at night for detail and deterrence, while infrared is ideal for discreet, long-range detection in total darkness. Many buyers mix both, or choose cameras that combine them.

If false alarms bother you, yes. AcuSense uses on-camera AI to alert only on people and vehicles, cutting nuisance triggers from trees, rain and pets, and it lets you search recordings by person or vehicle.

Choose by placement. Turrets are the versatile all-rounder for walls and eaves, bullets offer visible range for perimeters, and domes are discreet and tamper-resistant for ceilings and shared spaces.

IP rates dust and water resistance (look for IP66 or IP67 outdoors) and IK rates impact resistance (IK10 is the toughest). Use both when a camera is exposed to weather or possible tampering.

For a permanent system, yes. PoE carries power and video over one cable for always-on reliability, with no batteries or Wi-Fi dropouts. Wireless is handy only where you cannot run a cable.

For a multi-camera system, a PoE NVR is the standard: it powers the cameras and records to internal drives. Match the channel count to your cameras and size storage to how many days of footage you want to keep.
