ColorVu delivers 24/7 full-colour footage using a large-aperture lens plus supplement white light, ideal where some ambient or added light exists. DarkFighter is an ultra-sensitive low-light sensor that keeps colour at very low lux and switches to sharp black-and-white infrared in total darkness. ARC IP Networks, an authorised Hikvision reseller in Australia, stocks both.

What is Hikvision ColorVu?
ColorVu is Hikvision's full-colour night-vision technology. Instead of falling back to black-and-white infrared after dark, a ColorVu camera keeps producing colour footage around the clock. It does this two ways: a large-aperture lens (typically F1.0 on current models) that gathers far more light than a standard lens, and a built-in supplement white light that can gently illuminate the scene when ambient light runs low.
The payoff is detail you can actually use in an incident: the colour of a car, a jacket or a number plate rather than a grey silhouette. Many ColorVu models also pair with AcuSense people-and-vehicle detection, and newer Smart Hybrid Light versions let you switch between discreet infrared and bright white light. You can browse the full range on our Hikvision ColorVu hub.
What is Hikvision DarkFighter?
DarkFighter is Hikvision's ultra-low-light sensor technology, found on cameras marked "Powered by DarkFighter". Rather than relying on added white light, it uses a highly sensitive image sensor and advanced processing to capture usable colour images at very low light levels, then transitions to crisp black-and-white infrared when the scene goes completely dark.
Because it leans on the sensor rather than a floodlight, DarkFighter is well suited to areas where you don't want to add visible light, or where you need to see clearly across a larger, dimly lit space. For a deeper look, read our companion guide, DarkFighter ultra low-light cameras explained.
ColorVu vs DarkFighter: how they differ
Both technologies exist to solve the same problem — poor night footage — but they take different routes. ColorVu prioritises 24/7 colour and uses light (aperture plus supplement white light) to get there. DarkFighter prioritises sensitivity, holding colour as long as possible and then delivering clean infrared detail in total darkness. The table below sums up the practical differences.
| Aspect | ColorVu | DarkFighter |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Full colour, 24/7 | Maximum sensitivity in very low light |
| How it works | Large-aperture lens + supplement white light | Ultra-sensitive sensor + processing |
| In total darkness | Colour, using its white light | Black-and-white with infrared |
| Adds visible light? | Yes, when needed | No (relies on sensor, IR in the dark) |
| Best-fit scene | Some ambient light present or light acceptable | Dim areas where extra light is unwanted |
| Typical colour output | Colour at all hours | Colour at low lux, IR B/W when fully dark |
Note that the line is blurring: newer Smart Hybrid Light and DarkFighter 2.0 cameras combine sensitive sensors with switchable infrared and white light, so a single camera can behave like both.
What the footage actually looks like
The difference is easiest to understand by picturing the same scene at night.
- ColorVu: a bright, colour image — you can read the colour of clothing, vehicles and signage. If the area is pitch black, the camera's supplement white light lifts the whole scene to keep it in colour.
- DarkFighter: in dim conditions it holds natural colour with very little noise; once it's genuinely dark and infrared engages, you get a clean, high-contrast black-and-white picture with strong detail on faces and movement.
Neither is "sharper" in general — both are offered in 4MP, 6MP and 8MP (4K) resolutions. The real choice is whether you want guaranteed colour (ColorVu) or maximum reach into the dark without adding light (DarkFighter). To understand how infrared distance is managed, see Smart IR explained.
Which is best for a driveway, a street, or total darkness?
The right answer depends on how much light your location already has — and whether adding light is welcome.
Dark driveway or side yard
Little to no ambient light and you want colour detail? ColorVu is the natural pick — its supplement white light also acts as a visible deterrent.
Street-lit or shopfront area
Some kerbside or building light already present? Either works. ColorVu gives constant colour; DarkFighter delivers clean colour from that ambient light without any added glare.
Total darkness / no added light
Rural blocks or areas where visible light is unwanted suit DarkFighter, which relies on its sensitive sensor and switches to infrared black-and-white.
Which Hikvision cameras have ColorVu or DarkFighter?
Both technologies span bullets, turrets and domes, so you rarely have to compromise on form factor. ColorVu models carry the ColorVu name and a large-aperture lens; DarkFighter models are labelled "Powered by DarkFighter". Some current-generation cameras — particularly Smart Hybrid Light and DarkFighter 2.0 units — blend both approaches, offering a sensitive sensor plus switchable infrared and white light on one device.
The featured cameras below show a genuine ColorVu turret and bullet alongside "Powered by DarkFighter" models so you can compare directly. If you're weighing night vision against AI detection instead, our ColorVu vs AcuSense guide covers that decision.
How to choose between ColorVu and DarkFighter
Work through three quick questions:
- Do you need colour at all hours? If yes, choose ColorVu.
- Is adding visible light acceptable? If no — a bedroom-facing camera, a discreet perimeter, or somewhere glare would annoy neighbours — lean DarkFighter.
- How dark does it truly get? Genuinely pitch-black locations favour DarkFighter's sensitivity and infrared; areas with any usable light suit either.
Still unsure? As an authorised Hikvision reseller, ARC IP Networks can match the technology to your exact site and dispatch from Melbourne. Send us your camera positions and we'll recommend the right ColorVu or DarkFighter model for each.
